In terms of advertising, i have been looking at other brands that are urban and the kind of market that we are aiming to advertise too, baring that in mind, i have been looking through skating-boarding magazines and also looking at the most well known brands and how they are campaigning themselves. i am trying to see how they advertise what the focus's are etc.
First of all i am going to look at Vans , this is the vans sole campaign playing on the idea of the sole of your shoe and your soul within yourself.
This is the vans 'sole' campaign, they are playing on the idea of soul and sole, and trying to make people feel re-energized, they have used illustration to do this as it helps make you feel more connected, and makes you feel younger again, the idea of refresh your sole, or collective sole makes people feel alive, refreshed, connected and like it will give them a new lease on life. i think in general how casual the advertising is will really help it work in the sector that it is in and will connect with a lot more people, for a brand that started in the skateboarding market they are managing to keep that but also by not making it all about skateboarding they will connect with a much larger group of people.
Next i am going to look at DC that are another huge brand in terms of urban sports but manage to appeal to a much larger market due to how they advertise.
this is the 'GetFitted' Campaign by DCshoe I like this campaign because of how it is put together it is accessible, it the way it looks like a magazine or like thrown together but also has the professional feel to it, although this is a snowboard campaign i do not think that it is making that overly in your face and the products still look like fashion first then purpose comes second in this campaign.
Next i looked at the Etnies advertising campaign, this campaign i believe was called timebomb however i am not completely sure.
This is the etnies campaign that they released last year, in this campaign etnie tried to appeal to each of the extreme sport specialists by putting in somebody who is world known and then slapping etnies on the picture somewhere, I think that this is a tactic that will most likely worked quite well as people tend to relate better, and when there is a specialist linked people want to be as good as them and the way the advertising works people think, they are the best and if they are using it i should be using it also. the photography is really quite amazing and very adventurous and action packed, i like how the font used is very warming and casual which will make people feel more comfortable with the brand and that it is quite a accessible brand which is out for your best interest's and doesn't take itself to seriously its more about the fun and making sure that you have fun.
I then looked at what some of the most stand out adverts in the skateboarding world have been and some of my favourites.
one of my favorites is the 1990 nice ad campaign by world industries.
You have to remember that a lot of what skateboarding's roots are built on is rebellion and getting away from rules,
this ad campaign was more about sticking one to the man and advertising at the same time, in the below part they state that they can not run the ads they want to due to them being deemed to offensive, this side of rebellion will really relate to the target audience and therefor i think this is a really good advertisement.
